For the Love of Candy

February 5th, 2012

Article by Dara Derion

Ask anyone what they most identify with their childhood and it will likely include some reference or another to a particular candy. We have our memories of mom’s specialty dishes – the comfort food that instantly transports us to a simpler time; memories of the toys that sparked our interest and gained our loyalty; memories of the games we played with friends during seemingly endless summer days that only ended when mom called us in for dinner; and…the candy we loved. Oh that candy; the sight of which still sends our pulse racing. What else would inspire otherwise health-conscious adults who are so picky about their diets to bite into pure, unadulterated sugar with childlike enthusiasm? It’s the candy of our childhood; the sweets and treats for which we saved our money, begged mom and dad to buy, and travelled by foot or bicycle to retrieve with pockets full of change and a one-track mind.

Now that we have our own mode of transportation at our disposal and we’re in charge of the shopping carts, most of us have found that the novelty of candy has worn off a bit. There’s something about being a kid and wanting what you can’t have whenever you want it, about that decadent – and sometimes forbidden – taste in your mouth, about the sugar rush – and feeling of complete and total satisfaction that follows. It’s a feeling that is hard to recapture – as so much of childhood is difficult to recapture; but it’s not surprising that retro candy is so popular to a generation that pays homage to its first sweet tooth. So what’s your soft spot?

Candy Necklaces – First made popular in the 1950s, candy necklaces (also folded over several times to make candy bracelets by pioneering youngsters) brought convenient candy eating to a whole new level. Generations of kids to follow could be seen riding their bikes down their street with necklaces firmly between their teeth. How can we forget the sweet satisfaction of being able to bite down on our accessories and have the crunch candy give way to powdery sweetness. It was worth the inevitable sticky neck.

Dots – I don’t know about you but Dots brought out the OCD in me. I loved the sheer joy of being able to separate these gumdrop nubs into colors. I ate the green first (not my favorite) and slowly moved up through the flavors until I got to red. Dots were first introduced in 1945 and continue to be a popular treat.

Atomic Fireballs – There’s nothing better than when hot and sweet collide and not many do it better than the Atomic Fireball. Created in 1954, the Atomic Fireball was reflective of the 1950s atomic culture and quickly became a popular candy for kids of all ages. The Atomic Fireball is a cinnamon-flavored jawbreaker that – upon sucking on it – offers alternating waves of sweet and spicy. A favorite childhood pastime in my neighborhood? Seeing how many Fireballs we could eat at one time.

Pixy Stix – Okay, I dare you to think of something more unbelievably gratifying as a kid than being able to pour straight sugar into your mouth. Resembling packaged straws, Pixy Stix are filled with powdery goodness in a variety of flavors and has been getting our attention since its inception in the 1930s.

Ring Pops – Another rung on the candy jewelry chain, ring pops were all glitz, glamour, and deliciousness when they appeared on the scene in the late 1970s.

No matter what type of retro candy you revere you don’t have to let them go just because your childhood has long since ended. Candy purveyors – whose job it is to follow sweet trends – have long recognized our love for – and fierce loyalty to – the retro candies of our youth and have made it available through their stores – traditionally and online; a great way to accessorize a birthday or anniversary party, a themed decade party, or to treat yourself with something that will always hold a sweet spot in your heart.

Here is some footage I shot yesterday of the outside and inside of the now famous Olympia Milk Bar in the Stanmore/Annandale area of Sydney Australia. My girlfriend and I were declined an interview with the owner when we asked him. We are not aware of any detailed footage that exists of the inside of this shop, to date. It was very difficult to shoot this footage for a number of reasons and if it were not for good planing/timing on my part and some good luck regarding what the owner was doing at the time, then we could not get this footage on video at all. Owner does not like people filming or photographing inside, as was made clear to us when we also asked him about that. Otherwise, the owner was friendly and service was good overall.

Swiss Maid Fudge – An Old-Fashioned, Handmade Candy Shop Turned Virtual Sweets Purveyor

January 29th, 2012

Article by Toan Dinh

Generations of Americans have long had a soft spot for old-fashioned, homemade candy. Many of us fondly remember our local handmade candy shop, recalling favorite flavors of jawbreakers, the dark, black taste of sweet and salty licorice, or the crisp autumn apples covered layers of gooey, creamy, caramel. It’s hard to imagine the candy of today living up to the nostalgic memory of the quaint candies of yesterday. After all, how could store-bought fudge ever match Grandma’s secret recipe for chocolate fudge? How could factory-made caramel apples ever be as good as the ones made fresh at the farm at harvest time? All is not lost, however, as a small contingent of traditional candy makers have stayed true to the confectionary quality and methods of the past.

Swiss Maid Fudge, a handmade candy shop in Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin, is one such traditionalist. Forty-five years ago, they started making classic, homemade chocolate fudge according to tried-and-true, old-fashioned techniques: boil all-natural candy ingredients in large copper kettles set over an open, gas-fired cast iron stove, and pour the contents out onto cool, solid marble to mix and mold the candy. Very little in that process has changed since they started; the handmade candy shop sticks to the rules and techniques handed down through the family for generations. Only two things have been adjusted in Swiss Maid Fudge’s operation: the expansion of their line of sweet products, and the availability to buy those products online.

Their virtual handmade candy shop now enables customers across the continental United States to get their hands on old favorites such as creamy chocolate fudge, homemade caramel apples, salt water taffy, hand-dipped chocolates, and crunchy brittles and barks. To get the creamy taste and texture that so many of us remember, Swiss Maid Fudge uses only 100% Wisconsin Sweet Cream Butter in their products, adding no preservatives to tarnish the flavor. As well, make all of their candy in small batches, shipping it out as soon as possible so that customers can enjoy the taste of fresh candy.

Old hands at candy-making, Swiss Maid Fudge is particularly proud of the quality and variety of their seasonal treats. Over several decades, this handmade candy shop has developed several creative flavors for the holidays, including peppermint stick chocolate fudge, handmade cranberry walnut fudge, candy cane truffles, gingerbread bark and holiday caramel apples dipped in white chocolate and sparkly, green sugar. These goodies are made available only during the holidays, able to sweeten any festive gathering from September through January.

Family-owned and operated since 1962, Swiss Maid Fudge maintains a loyal following in their local area and beyond. They even offer tours of the handmade candy shop, making sure that everyone gets a taste of homemade candy. Swiss Maid Fudge has received an award for “Best Product” by Orca Communications Unlimited, LLC for the high quality candy products they offer.

Beautiful Melody?”Based on Han Dynasty folk songs in, Xianghe Song, Lapel is a music form developed in the traditions of Pre-Qin Dynasty and Chu music.Lapel was first recorded in Book of Jin-Music.The traditional singer accompanied himself on a drum, while an orchestral instrument was played at the same time, and so it got its name. Lapel came from Book of Odes-Zheng Feng, which describes a young lady revealing her love to her admirer. The graceful and sophisticated background music and Hahui’s singing seem like a boat, we glide through the long river of history, reminiscing about a love of two thousand years ago. The snippets of remembrances in the lyrics express the emotions with references to the collar of traditional clothing, extending the feelings through recollection. This song is in the tradition of the ancient rhymes of the Spring and Autumn periods rendered in the folk music melodies of that time”

High Quality, click: fr.youtube.com Here’s a version of this warm song. Thank you Ron (rhopen) for the microphone, you were right about its quality =) Lyrics: GARTAN MOTHER’S LULLABY lyrics by Seosamh MacCathmhaoil (Joseph Campbell) Sleep O babe, for the red bee hums the silent twilight’s fall, Aoibheall from the grey rock comes, to wrap the world in thrall. A leanbhan O, my child, my joy, my love my heart’s desire, The crickets sing you lullaby, beside the dying fire. Dusk is drawn and the Green Man’s thorn is wreathed in rings of fog, Siabhra sails his boat till morn, upon the Starry Bog. A leanbhan O, the paly moon hath brimmed her cusp in dew, And weeps to hear the sad sleep-tune, I sing O love to you. Faintly sweet doth the chapel bell, ring o’er the valley dim, Tearmann’s peasant voices swell, in fragrant evening hymn. A leanbhan O, the low bell rings, my little lamb to rest, And angel- dreams till morning sings, its music in your breast.
